There was a sudden thunderstorm in New York tonight. During the dinner hour when many New Yorkers were sitting outside at restaurants, enjoying the mild temperatures. Again the newspapers today were rife with speculative reports about Martha Stewart and her ImClone stock transactions last December, and her broker, and who knew what and when.

 

Her broker, the handsome man about town, Peter Bacanovic, was nowhere to be found this past weekend. Someone told me he’d gone to London with Nan Kempner on a trip planned long ago. If so, it’s safe to assume it was for a fashionable party since this is the Season in London and Nan Kempner (as well as Peter Bacanovic) are often found at the center of things social.

 

Meanwhile, out in the Hamptons, Martha Stewart (who owns not one but two houses in East Hampton) was present and accounted for at an anniversary celebration of Jerry Della Femina’s restaurant. Nobody noticed any change in the Lifestyle Guru’s presence or behavior, except for the bodyguards.

 

Which all sounds like business as usual for both Bacanovic and Stewart (except for the bodyguards), who are both known to be very much in the social swim. The case against Bacanovic, however it exists, is not known publicly and so everything else is speculation. It may be that crimes were committed by either or any party, but none of that has been made known as of this writing, although it is presented as pretty much as a given in the press.

Martha Stewart’s public image is the subtext of the crucifying she’s getting in the papers and amongst the social set whose parties and events she often attends. Having seen her at dozens of these things over the years, it is still hard to fathom, on observation, what it is about her that provokes such umbrage. She’s a good looking woman, tall, and otherwise almost innocuous in appearance. She smiles charmingly for the camera (which means nothing in the case of almost any of us when it comes to determining character or even personality). I’ve seen her laughing, but never was near enough to hear the joke. I’ve never heard her make a funny or witty remark.

 

However, the reports that come to the fore about her are always about her temper, which is said to be hard, cold and volatile, especially with underlings.

 

People who treat their underlings badly very often deserve the same, in my opinion. That is not to say, however, that they get the same. Because, Martha Stewart aside, there are a lot of people who live in this high-powered frenetic world of New York (or any other power center) who are famous for treating their underlings badly. Abuse might be a better word. Without it ever occurring to them that Martha’s not the only monster in our midst.

 

However, aside from the if’s, and’s, or but’s of Martha Stewart’s stock-trades, she does have very serious business problems caused specifically by the bankruptcy of Kmart, which was a big client, and now with this scandal which, proven or not, is harmful to her public image and possibly her business future. This is very unfortunate for someone who has worked as hard and as long as Martha Stewart has to build a business that is based almost entirely on her homespun/ modern woman image.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Merrill Lynch has suspended the broker who handled a trade for Martha Stewart in the shares of ImClone Systems Inc., a troubled biotech company whose former CEO has been arrested on securities fraud charges.

 

In a statement released late Friday, Merrill Lynch said it had put Peter Bacanovic, as well as his assistant, Douglas Faneuil, on paid leave following an internal investigation. Merrill Lynch said it has turned over information to the relevant authorities, but declined to comment further.

 

Bacanovic is the broker for ImClone co-founder and former CEO Sam Waksal and his daughter Aliza, as well as Stewart. Waksal was charged June 12 with insider trading.

 

``It's my understanding that Merrill Lynch uncovered some discrepancies in the statements of these two employees as they prepared to meet with our investigators next week,'' said Ken Johnson, a spokesman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is investigating the ImClone case.

 

``This action only confirms our suspicions that we are on the right track and getting very close to the truth,'' he added.

She's very well connected but this thing seems to be spinning out of her control.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to fall on hard times and escort as his family is quite well off and they and he have connections which he has accumulated throughout his life and education at the toniest private schools including Andover if I'm not mistaken.
