If all the passengers and crew are either killed or hospitalized in serious condition, what's the expectation of a timely response? I'd think the survivirs would be concentraing on so many other things besides responding to a curious stranger.

On those specialty MBs that BG is referring to, it won't be the survivors or their family replying to any inquiries. The inquirers likely will not be the general public but other aviators or those closely involved in aviation and the responders will be interested friends or knowledgeable, generally involved onlookers. My office is at the airport. When something happens I am very much concerned but I may or may not (likely not) personally know any participants but I DO know what obviously happened.

When a FEDEX DC-10 had a landing gear collapse on landing on 36R at MEM, I was in my office and knew immediately that it had happened. I also saw the smoke from the ensuing fire. The only occupants of the aircraft were the crew members. In complete disregard of rules and regulations of abandoning the aircraft post haste, they first threw their baggage out the windows and then slid down the escape ropes to safety when, all the while, the fire was getting bigger and more fierce. Because they all got away safely it became a funny story as told by the tower folks who witnessed the whole thing. If a family member had called me or emailed me, I would have been able to tell them immediately that all aboard were safe. That basically is the point made by BG.

Best regards,

KMEM
