What an exciting and entertaining show! A wonderful cast and orchestra! Part concert, part musical, part theatrical event it was a fun night of theater.

Based on the true life story and music of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti in the 1970's he created a powerful sound of funk, infused with musical influences from around the world. Politically charged and critical of the Nigerian government, he was a target of the government and they tortured and oppressed him and his family.

The African inspired dances are terrific and I've never seen a cast work harder. Move over Chicago, there's a whole lotta new and energetic dancing going on on West 49th St at the Eugene O'Neill theater. The theater has been transformed into the club, The Shrine, that Fela founded in Lagos and a great and wonderful surprise awaits those who enter the theater in the form of an onstage orchestra playing some funky music while the audience finds their seats. This is truly a great theatrical experience. I loved it!

It opens tomorrow, it played to sold out audience last year off-off-Broadway and Ben Brantley in his NY Times review called it "one hellva party!"

I'm not big on the theater but this actually sounds interesting being that I love music from around the world & am starting to get into Afro type music. Do you know how long it's running for?

Hugs,

Greg
