It never realised until your post about the "home invasion" that your BF was also with the NYPD. Wow - how many hot scenarios could that bring to mind - but I digress.

I would be interested in hearing (if you don't mind sharing with us) the level of acceptance you find, vis a vis your gay relationship, by your fellow officers. I had always imagined the NYPD to be fairly homophoic. Is this the case? Do your colleagues know you are gay? Do they know your BF is also on the force? And how cool are they with the whole thing.

If you would prefer not to reply, I understand, but would be very interested to know. Thanks in advance.

Ok here goes, basically yes i am "out" i came out in Summer 1991 aged 28 at the time there were a few assholes who objected but now in 2002 95% of people are cool, times have changed as well as attitudes most guys just wanna know that you will do your job properly whether you are gay, straight,bi whatever.

The NYPD is 40,000 strong so there will be homophobes, racists and general assholes just as there would if you got 40,000 people off the streets and put them together but the command structure now has rules against behaviour for those kinds of people and it is not tolerated, you may have also heard of GOAL(Gay Officers Action League)which i am a member if you go to Pride in NYC you may have seen them marching they are an organisation for gay/lesbian law enforcement personnel and they over the years have helped make acceptance better.

Most of my colleagues know that my BF is a cop but because he works in a different part of the city its not too much of a problem, plus we are both very straight looking/acting my BF especially so that it can be quite a shock for some people when they find out :7,because he is 12 years younger than me he hasnt had so much in the way of bigotry to deal with which is cool.

Basically we are just two guys who love each other and just happen to be cops, you have to have a thick skin to do this job anyway there are always gonna be people who will object but thats the case in any job or career which involves interaction with straight people. We have been together since Feb 1999 and i think because 80% of the time we do not see much of each other because of shifts the time we spend together is precious just doing the little things...shopping,laundry,watching tv going for a meal, the hot sex :p .

Thanks Rush for sharing that with us. I hope you both continue to prosper and have a happy life. If you ever get the "urge" to do an expose type of interview - re gays in the force - I'm sure one of the major networks would pick it up real fast.

You too could be famous :-)
