Matt departs

Matt Cavanaugh will depart "West Side Story" in mid-December when his contract expires. It's unusual for an actor to spend less than a year with a show, especially when it's a hit. In a Times interview, he suggests the role is demanding, as it obviously is. I've spotted him jogging in the neighborhood around 8 on show evenings. He must get a break now and then.

 

There are rumors of much strife backstage and heavy absenteeism among the cast.

I work on Broadway as an attorney and six month contracts are fairly standard although producers like to get run of the play contracts from stars although that's not all that easy these days.

 

I do hear that the actress who plays Maria is not exactly a dream to work with.

 

Matt is cute as hell; I suspect he's a little tired of Arthur Laurents' attention as well.
