There was an old network show (20/20) about these Nigerian scams. Usually they get a photo of a Tom Selleck lookalike and hook some lonely heart with it. When the woman realizes she has been scammed, usually it's too embarrassing. One woman was tricked into laundering stolen property that was held at her house and she was to forward it to Nigeria. TV cameras went through her house and it looked like a storage warehouse. Literally boxes to the ceiling not even opened and three or four refrigerators side by side. She had spent thousands of dollars in shipping fees. She was sending the stuff to her "fiancee" Tom Selleck.

I think that in 2009 going to 2010 to fall for these scam sounds quite naive but hey, it happens!

 

I still keep receiving at least 4-5 times a month an email from some exceptionally generous widow around the world who chose my address to send an invitation to get 20% of her late husband's security box or bank account worthy usually from 900,000 Euros to 2,000,000 Pounds going through 1,500,000 dollars...

I, too, get way too much junk despite all the filters. Delete, delete, delete. I can understand on some level, though, as my folks are starting to get up there. I'll admit that I have a twinge of worry whenever I read about scams involving the elderly.
