I feel like her in the song. I love this musical and this song reminds me of my relationships...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt-IBJpEMzA

There was a time when men were kind,

And their voices were soft,

And their words inviting.

There was a time when love was blind,

And the world was a song,

And the song was exciting.

There was a time when it all went wrong...

I dreamed a dream in time gone by,

When hope was high and life, worth living.

I dreamed that love would never die,

I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid,

And dreams were made and used and wasted.

There was no ransom to be paid,

No song unsung, no wine, untasted.

But the tigers come at night,

With their voices soft as thunder,

As they tear your hope apart,

And they turn your dream to shame.

He slept a summer by my side,

He filled my days with endless wonder...

He took my childhood in his stride,

But he was gone when autumn came!

And still I dream he'll come to me,

That we will live the years together,

But there are dreams that cannot be,

And there are storms we cannot weather!

I had a dream my life would be

So different from this hell I'm living,

So different now from what it seemed...

Now life has killed the dream I dreamed...

Fantastic Song and Performance

I feel like her in the song. I love this musical and this song reminds me of my relationships...

I can't believe nobody responded to this. It seems that some of the best posts get very few or no responses. Go figure. It's the MB.

Thanks for posting the lyrics and video link, and sharing your personal connection to the song. I love this song. It's so beautiful, though the lyrics are so sad. I linked to the video and noted that there have been over 4 million hits on this version. Good choice for posting!

Les Miserables happens to be my very favorite show ever. The music just flows from one great song to another. It reminds me of the way the music flows in my favorite opera, Puccini's La Boheme.

The writers of the music and lyrics for Les Miserables also produced Miss Saigon, another first-rate show.

Thanks for Posting This

I also want to thank you for posting this link and the lyrics. That song always brings me back to one of my best vacations ever and seeing the musical on the London stage. It is such a powerful song for me on many levels and I just love to listen to it. Thank you again.

You're welcome...

When I first saw Les Miserables I was so mesmerized that I listened to its soundtrack over and over... I don't why they don't make something like this anymore...

On my own

And now I'm all alone again,

Nowhere to go, no one to turn to.

Did not want your money sir,

Came out here cuz I was told to.

And now the night is near,

Now I can make believe he's here.

Sometimes I walk alone at night

When everybody else is sleeping.

I think of him, and then I'm happy

With the company I'm keeping.

The city goes to bed,

And I can live inside my head.

On my own,

Pretending he's beside me.

All alone,

I walk with him till morning.

Without him,

I feel his arms around me,

And when I lose my way I close my eyes

And he has found me.

In the rain,

The pavement shines like silver.

All the lights

Are misty in the river.

In the darkness,

The trees are full of starlight,

And all I see is him and me for ever and forever.

And I know

It's only in my mind,

That I'm talking to myself

And not to him.

And although I know that he is blind,

Still I say,

There's a way for us.

I love him,

But when the night is over,

He is gone,

The river's just a river.

Without him,

The world around me changes.

The trees are bare and everywhere

The streets are full of strangers.

I love him,

But every day I'm learning,

All my life,

I've only been pretending!

Without me,

His world will go on turning,

The world is full of happiness that I have never known!

I love him...

I love him...

I love him...

But only on my own...

Another from Les Mis........

I feel like her in the song. I love this musical and this song reminds me of my relationships...

As much as I enjoyed Les Mis, this song just doesn't do it for me.

I counter with my favourite from Les Mis....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrX_WT9LGzo

God on high

Hear my prayer

In my need

You have always been there

He is young

He's afraid

Let him rest

Heaven blessed.

Bring him home

Bring him home

Bring him home.

He's like the son I might have known

If God had granted me a son.

The summers die

One by one

How soon they fly

On and on

And I am old

And will be gone.

Bring him peace

Bring him joy

He is young

He is only a boy

You can take

You can give

Let him be

Let him live

If I die, let me die

Let him live

Bring him home

Bring him home

Bring him home.

It's been about 10 years since I first and last saw Les Miserables (on Broadway). Thanks for sharing...I'll need to go see it again. =)

A few years ago I finished the full unabridged Count of Monte Cristo...and then began Les Miserables but a couple days into reading it life changed, and I haven't read a book since. :(

hmm

If you are flying a lot for work, I would recommend John Grisham's books. I can't put down his books once I start reading them..

Don't want to hijack the thread...but since you are the OP...I've been thinking about that lately. For a while the new use of my iphone as an ipod was doing well for me...and then I started reading the airline travel mags...but that's only good per airline each month. I know a lot of people who have read his books but haven't looked at them personally, so I'll probably start browsing around for flight reading material. =)

Thanks.

Thank you for this thread and the beautiful music I have listened to. My mom a great patron of the arts took us to muscials as soon as we could sit still. She loved the theater and especially musicals. Unfotunately listening has me feeling melancholy remembering as she passed this last July. Prior to her passing she had given me her tickets to see Phantom and shocking as it may be it was really the first time I had the chance to see it. Sitting in her seat the music began and I found myself weeping through most of it thinking of her and the first time she took me as a teen ager to see a Broadway show, Purlie with a young new star Cleavon Little some 40 years ago. The music of Phantom can take a person down memory lane quite easily. I loved the links posted here. The music was beautiful, the performances exceptional. Thanks as I remember my mom through music.

Your mom's awesome! Losing someone we love is tough. I remember you posting about your mom. I once again pray that she rests in peace. She must be proud that she brought up a wonderful man like you. After all her life continues in you.

I went to see Phantom of Opera with my sister a couple of years ago, I really enjoyed it.

Ah if I had someone to sing this song with....

"All I Ask of You"

No more talk

of darkness,

Forget these

wide-eyed fears.

I'm here,

nothing can harm you -

my words will

warm and calm you.

Let me be

your freedom,

let daylight

dry -your tears.

I'm here,

with you, beside you,

to guard you

and to guide you . . .

CHRISTINE

Say you love me

every

waking moment,

turn my head

with talk of summertime . . .

Say you need me

with you,

now and always . . .

promise me that all

you say is true -

that's all I ask

of you . . .

RAOUL

Let me be

your shelter,

let me

be your light.

You're safe:

No-one will find you

your fears are

far behind you . . .

CHRISTINE

All I want

is freedom,

a world with

no more night . . .

and you

always beside me

to hold me

and to hide me . . .

RAOUL

Then say you'll share with

me one

love, one lifetime . . .

Iet me lead you

from your solitude . . .

Say you need me

with you

here, beside you . . .

anywhere you go,

let me go too -

Christine,

that's all I ask

of you . . .

CHRISTINE

Say you'll share with

me one

love, one lifetime . . .

say the word

and I will follow you . . .

BOTH

Share each day with

me, each

night, each morning . . .

CHRISTINE

Say you love me . . .

RAOUL

You know I do . . .

BOTH

Love me -

that's all I ask

of you . . .

(They kiss)

Anywhere you go

let me go too . . .

Love me -

that's all I ask

of you . .

Bart, sorry for your loss...I can only imagine the emotional experience you had watching Phantom. It's tear jerking to begin with...but to have recently suffered loss would make it even more.

"All I Ask of You" is one of my favorites...up there with "Music of the Night" (which I've been listening to almost 2-3 times a day the last few days on youtube). "Think of Me" was an all-time favorite of mine since I first saw the production nearly 10 years ago on Broadway...but has been declining in respect to the other two. I was lucky to see it again performed in London a couple months ago.

Michael Crawford

Michael Crawford singing The Music of the Night

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTDdbuhqELM&feature=related

I have brought you to the seat of sweet music's throne ...

to this kingdom where all must pay homage to music ...

music...

You have come here, for one purpose, and one alone ...

I first heard you sing,

I have needed you with me, to serve me, to sing, for my music ...

my music ...

Night-time sharpens, heightens each sensation ...

Darkness stirs and wakes imagination ...

Silently the senses abandon thier defences ...

Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendour ...

Grasp it, sense it - tremulous and tender ...

Turn your face away from the garish light of day,

turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light -

and listen to the music of the night ...

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams!

Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before!

Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar!

And you'll live as you've never lived before ...

Softly, deftly, music shall surround you ...

Feel it, hear it, closing in around you ...

Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind,

in this darkness which you know you cannot fight -

the darkness of the music of the night.

Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world!

Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before!

Let your soul

Take you where you long to be!

Only then can you belong to me ...

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication!

Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation!

Let the dream begin,

let your darker side give in to the power of

the music that I write - the power of the music of the night ...

You alone can make my song take flight -

help me make the music of the night ...

I clicked on the link and the phrase "Best Musical Theater Composer" came up. Now, I mean this in all honesty - do people honestly believe that Andrew Lloyd Weber has produced higher quality musicals than Stephen Sondheim?

Posted

I feel it best to say they are the two best living musical composers for muscial theater. Through Broadway history how can one compare, Lerner/Lowe, Rogers/Hammestein, others. But you can not deny ALW's impact on muscial theater. He has gone from the Bible to Argentian Dictator, from poetry to roller skates, and even horror character. To most he has given a Shakespearean nuance to and still seems larger than his short frame would indicate. Yet I think by most the greatest musical of all time is still considered to be West Side Story and Sondheim did write the lyrics. So definitely a tough choice, I'll just sit back and enjoy their music.

I recently saw a performance of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music"...featuring "Bring in the Clowns". Quite moving in it's own right.

I think that the persons assertion to ALW being the "best" or what not is due to the longevity that his productions run at...isn't Phantom now the longest running? And second to that...was cats? I'm asking, not completely sure.
