Letterman who has been in a relationship with a woman for more than 20 years and who had a child with this woman and subsequently married her, both in the last few years, admitted on his show today that he has had sex with several members of his staff. Someone was trying to blackmail him about it and he went to the police and after some investigation and a sting operation, the person was arrested. I assume that is why this question is raised.

Well, that's ONE explanation. The whole story has not yet been told, as we only have Letterman's version. We have not heard from any of the young staffers involved, although there is a story that one was helped with her tuition fees at college. We do not know who initiated all these so-called "office romances". If Letterman did, even in one case, then he could be construed as having sexually harassed a vulnerable, younger person under his employ. We'll have to see how it plays out.

 

Even if all the young women were the initiators, then the worst Letterman is guilty of is incredibly poor judgment in exchanging sexual favors for other advantages with his female employees. Also, can you imagine the impact this must have had on other employee's seeing the chosen few (or many) on intimate terms with the boss. How better to poison an office atmosphere.

I hope you're not referring to my post. I didn't proclaim Letterman's guilt but only pointed out we have not heard from the other parties yet. We may never hear for that matter as many women who are harassed and give in to their bosses sexual demands never reveal it because of the shame or feelings of guilt. The fact is that Letterman exercised complete power over his employees and should have been more careful in having sexual dalliances with his staff members.

 

People who are already excusing his behavior without knowing all the facts often cite terms such as "office romance" or "affairs between co-workers". In Letterman's case, because he was the boss and is answerable only to CBS, if he initiated any of the sexual advances then that could be construed as sexual harrassment depending on how the staffer felt about it. And I would not call this a situaton involving co-workers. That suggests some sort of parity of power, which is clearly not the case here.

 

Had he been a teacher or pastor, he would have been deemed guilty on the evidence of his self admission. In the case of private employers, there is still a line that cannot be crossed. I don't think we are in a position to know YET whether he crossed that line. Time will tell.
