When the current HBO production was being aired, I decided to forgo it as I hadn't yet seen the original (and hadn't even heard about it, though it has a camp following (and I'm all for camp!)).

My trusty video store in "The Village" had the original documentary version, so I rented it and watched. Spellbound. In some ways, it was a bit like a car wreck..... but I couldn't tear myself away. I watched it twice in 24 hours AND also watched all the extras (Directors & Editors comments) included in the DVD version.

The HBO version came out, and I was a little leery of seeing it.....how could anything compare to the original?? But finally I did watch...and was pleasantly thrilled. Jessica Lang and Drew Barrymore both demonstrated what great actresses they are, and the "missing pieces" that were added only made the whole story more poignant and strange.

While I congratulate Ms. Lang for her Emmy win for the role, I feel it equally belonged to Ms. Barrymore, as it was the two women's interactions with each other that made for engaging viewing.

If you haven't seen either version, I highly recommend them both. A fascinating story all around.
