My own doberman was energetic, friendly and quite territorial. Walk along the road and you were of no particular interest but take one step into the yard and he was right there to check you out (& discourage you from proceeding further if you were a stranger). That's not something I taught him so I guess he picked up the property lines from our walks. Thanks to everyone for the dobie posts; they brought back some good memories. :)

FYI, my understanding is that way back when American breeders made the decision to tone down the aggressive behavior of the doberman and wrote temperment requirements into the show standards. Possibly I am misinformed, but I would not advise obtaining a puppy that has recent German imports in its pedigree, especially if you are not up to properly socializing a large aggressive dog. American dobies are by no means timid but are far less likely to take a chunk out of the neighbors.

As for myself my 2 Dobes came from Dandridge Tenn.. There also is a Breeder in Pennsylvania who goes for Over Size DOBES who they feel are more intimidating for guard work!

Yes the Breed Overall has been Bred for less aggressive tendencie's for many Years. The German Breeders do go for a very SHARP Dog! ;)

BUT DOBES are not for all owner's or First Time Dog owner's definitely! They are a Fantastic Breed Overall!

JT, my own experience with a dobie was entirely favorable (except for having to pick off all those ticks he vacuumed up from the back lot). The sire of my dog once stopped his owner from hitting his kids. He took the guy's arm in his mouth and held him 'till he calmed down. Didn't bite down, didn't growl, just refused to allow him to smack the children and then stayed between him and the kids until everything was back to normal. To me that's an amazing example of the breed's courage & protective instincts.

I agree though that a dobermann is not the breed for someone w/o the space for it to burn off some of its energy or who has little experience with large dogs.
