Hi Guys

I am heading to Vegas this week for some R&R - Meeting up with a small group of

friends Str8t/Gay/Male/Female. Any recommendations on Gay Restaurrants, Gay Piano Bars,

Gay Clubs/Bars where everyone would be comfortable.

We are probably not interested in KRAVE.

Other than the LIBERACE MUSEUM - Any other Dont Miss Places that we should see - will be there 7 days 6 nights

As always your help/knowledge/wit and wisdom is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The gay area in LV is called the fruit loop & is near the Hard Rock hotel. It is not an inviting area imo. I'm sure along with advice here Google can be helpful as well. I wish I could be more helpful but I've only been out in LV a few times & that was yrs ago. I do know that LV is not a super gay place. In fact it is pretty stright & white washed imo.

Hugs,

Greg

No, Vegas is not a super-gay place, mostly because there are so few gays in the entertainment industry :D <gawd, I crack me up sometimes>

Anyway, no specific recommendations for gay spots, but here are some suggestions from a well-informed (or so I'd like to think) local ...

CHARO! I'm totally serious. I saw her a couple of nights ago and was so freakin' entertained!! You won't understand a word she's saying, but somehow you'll die laughing. Her singing is the weakest aspect of the show, but she throws herself into it with so much energy, passion, and life that I somehow ended up enjoying it. As fans of the old Mike Douglas show know, Charo is a well-trained (studied with the great Segovia) classical guitarist. She doesn't just play guitar; she throws herself into the music with fire and emotion. The topper of the whole show is a flamenco dancer, Timo Nunez. 1) he's a truly great dancer, and 2) he's so drop-dead sexy you'll want to rush the stage. The show has a classic, Old Vegas vibe. And hey, what's gayer than Charo??

Food can be verrrrrrrrrry pricey in Vegas, especially if you're eating out three meals a day. My fave near-strip spots:

* Raku, 5030 W. Spring Mountain (about 2.5 miles west of Treasure Island). It's a Japanese grill that's become the hot spot for foodies and folks in the food industry. It's not cheap, but considering the superb quality of the ingredients, it's a good value. My faves are the Kobe beef w/wasabi and the grilled foie gras.

* Firefly, 3900 Paradise (about a mile east of the Flamingo). A Spanish tapas place. The food isn't particularly authentic Spanish (the staff is mostly Cuban), but the owners are former sous-chefs at Picasso (the 5 Diamond restaurant in the Bellagio) and they really know their food. Some seriously good food, and a terrific value.

* Lotus of Siam, Commercial Center (about a half-mile east of the Sahara). I'm a real Thai food freak and have eaten at many Thai restaurants all up and down the East Coast, and gotta say, this is my favorite Thai restaurant ever. Badlands, a popular gay bar, is in the Commercial Center also. BTW, Commercial Center has to be the most bizarre strip mall in the country. It has straight swingers bars, gay bathhouses, gay bars, a tranny bar, every type of Asian business imaginable, as well as both Korean and Mexican evangelical churches. Never had strip malls like that back in Boston, or anywhere else for that matter.

One final tip: if you're coming in from the airport, make sure to tell the cabdriver not to take the highway. It adds at least $8 to the fare, and it's not any quicker. He'll give you some BS about roadwork (which is true, actually, it's horrible all around the Strip), but he knows a way around it without taking the rip-off highway route. If your Spider Sense starts tingling with any cabdriver, just tell him, "I've got the TA on speed dial."

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. Don't know much about the gay scene here, but aside from that, I'll try to answer any other Vegas questions.

Vegas club guide

To find gay clubs and entertainment, go to one of the stores over in the "Fruit Loop" near the Hard Rock and pick up a QVegas magazine. It's a monthly rag with a listing inside of almost all the gay clubs, bars, addresses, nightly events, cover charges and hours. A number of the clubs do not open before 9PM and some don't open until 11PM nightly. The gay scene is not very big. If you are going out with straight friends, Krave really is your best bet on certain nights, but it opens at 11PM and there is probably a $20 cover.

At your hotel, ask the concierge for a copy of the Vegas 24/7 booklet. It lists everything that is going on at every hotel from shows to restaurants to nightclubs over a two week period. It is a very helpful guide. There is also a place at the mall for discount show tickets for certain shows as well. You can also pick up a Las Vegas Weekly (usually near a coffee shop) that also list the weekly events at all the nightclubs gay and straight. Have a great visit.
