All airline employees have a domicile which is the airport base to which they are assigned. There are many reasons why they may choose to live elsewhere. One, being recently assigned and the fact that it takes time to find and move into a new home. Two, being they expect to be moved to another domicile soon or hope to do so. Three, being personal choice. This is the most frequent reason. Like the grass being greener on the other side of the fence, these folks believe their quality of life is better elsewhere. That is their own decision and I have no problem. However, just like people who live out on the tip of Long Island and have to commute 1.5 hours to work each way, each day, these airline employees are responsible to get to work and on time.

It used to be only "senior" people lived very far away. They did it because senior people have much more control of their monthly schedules and could predict when and where they needed to be. Others started doing it because they could but they often suffered the result of having to be at their domicile a day early and often took another 1/2 day or so to get home. Even if one is working 3 five day work periods during the month, adding 4.5 days or more for travel to/from work takes the fun out of it for me.

As alluded to in the video, there are several versions of how to deal with this. All employees know of hotels and motels that offer airline discounts and especially so in major domicile cities. Then the mentioned "crash" pads. This term left over from the 60's when druggies would crash after their fun in a "pad". It has nothing to do with aviation "crashes". I have known pilots who drove their RV's to recurrent training which takes 1-4 weeks depending upon several things so it does not surprise me to see "permanent" RV's parked at LAX. But, for me, no thanks.

Best regards,

KMEM
