If you are not already familiar with a BlackBerry this ad would do nothing to enlighten you. On the other hand if you are trying to decide on a BlackBerry or an Iphone then this ad might persuade you to take another look at the BlackBerry, that is if you are a U2 fan.

Thanks

Sf I agree that was what I thought. I love watching ads. They tell different stories. Every element in an ad work together to deliver a message. If I didn't know what Blackberry was then it would be hard to know what this ad was about. I wondered why one of the best copywriters would do this intentionally? Maybe the ad is intended for people to search online about Blackberry.

This ad did nothing for me. U2 is a fine enough band but shouldn't BB be showing off what the phone can do & why they feel it is better then the Palm Pre or the iphone? That commercial was one minute & in that time frame they could have shown what the phone could do & more. Palm gets this & so does Apple. I guess if anything this commercial has turned me off more to BB then before when I tried out the phone in the store years back.

bad

This ad did nothing for me.

I agree - this ad is bad. Will I buy a Blackberry because I want U2s album? Hmmmm...

Plus - I had to go to blackberry.com/u2 to find out what the hell was up (maybe that's the point)...and I discover I can see where my friends are sitting in the Berlin concert. Well, I can probably do that with an IPhone too...."there's an App for that".

And, I have a Blackberry Storm and it's the biggest POS I've ever owned. Slowed down my typing to a crawl (the Curve was great - I am thinking of getting it fixed or just buying another one).

And I don't like U2. So there you go. Ending on a negative note! Lol.

I actually thought for the age group its aiming at its effective.

The entire lighting display behind and around the band is the BB logo. The band itself reaches a specific demo that will head over to the site to find out more.

Does anyone else think it ironic that U2 launched the ipod with a somewhat similar, ambiguous ad? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLrBQKCs_A0 (long version)

like it better

I like ipod ad better. You can actually connect an ipod with the commercial.

Since I don't watch tv but a few times a year I forgot about this commercial. Now see this is what I am talking about! The commercial shows the image of an ipod, music and booty shakin. These are all things at least to me that happen when I turn my ipod on and put the ear buds to my ears. When I think of a phone even in this high tech age I do not think of music playing although the Palm Pre and iphone can play music and has Pandora as an app. When I think of a phone I think of talking to friends and family, texting, surfing the net, putting my appointments in the calendar. Here is the Palm Pre's commercial for their beautiful multitasking phone

Gives a peak of what the phone can do while still being visually nice to the eye with the background and dancers.

As a branding spot, it's OK. Bono is probably the right celeb for the "I wanna be cool exec." demo. Bruce Springsteen also comes to mind. Some ad's are produced not so much as a go out and buy this product spot, but as a brand awareness spot. Target does that very well, particularly now that their red bullseye logo is ubiquitous. Overall, however, I don't think the Blackberry ad is a great piece of creative.
