He wasn't the kind of A-list celebrity usually memorialized here, but his unsentimental humor, essential kindness and honesty made him one of a kind. "Teacher Man," the story of his 30 years in the NYC public school system, is a great read.

Even better than "Teacher Man" is "Angela's Ashes" and "Tis". Not only was he a brilliant writer, he was a brilliant human being who managed to transform his own screwed up childhood into a life of giving to others. I am truly saddened that we have read the last of his words. I'm sure his life will continue to be an inspiration to those he touched.
