I have a horrid memory and I don't think I would remember if I was placed in a witness protection program.

Anyway, I am not sure if it was in this forum or another site where I first experienced what I am about to describe IN HOPES someone knows what the hell I am talking about.

The site I am looking for has to do with walking distance and even rates how "good" the variety you have around a certain address in regards to walking distance. You would enter an address and it would list things like restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels, shopping, etc. I remember rating my own neighborhood and it sucked and I wasn't shocked. However, I can see how this is an awesome resource to use when in a strange town. I could have used this when I was in Springfield, MA. Friday night.

Thank you for anyone who knows the site I am talking about.

PEACE

Oh my Romann. You HAVE an awesome tool! Thank you for posting it! Delightful body. Thank you.

Isn't this site cool? My neighborhood still sucks. However, the area near the hotel where I stayed in Massachusetts had a Dunkin Donuts around the corner. I was denied coffee due to my inability to travel well. This site could have connected me to the French Vanilla (with half and half and 3 Splendas) that I needed.

No, thank you for the info and for the compliments - much appreciated!

I had never heard of this tool and since I'm directionally challenged and usually unaware of what is right around the corner in any city let alone my home base of Dallas, I admire any technology that can make up for my lack of direction and knowledge and send me to the places that I need quickly and efficiently without delay. It amazes me how often I miss the obvious! ;)

They denied you coffee with all your requests of French Vanilla, half and half plus 3 Splendas? Don't they know that we depend on those coffee and Dunkin Donuts has some of the best coffee IMHO.

Thank you again as I will be using this tool often. ;)

A pretty cool site. I was impressed that it included a cafe that opened less than 2 months ago. However, I wonder why it also included a grocery store that closed about 5 months ago.

Thanks for coming back to post the link VDN.

I am glad you liked it Ryan. I am curious as to where it takes the data from. Though everything was pretty much up to date in my area, I had no idea there were Ballroom Dancing Classes so close to me. In addition, I found it odd it listed my podiatrist under "clothing" just because he sells orthopedic shoes.

http://www.walkscore.com

What an awesome tool. I would like to thank, well, ME for finding this for ME. I would like to thank the original poster on whatever forum who originally discussed this.

I intially liked the idea of walkscore, but I find it a bit misleading. For example, I typed my address which is in a urban-suburb outside of Dallas and they are rating it as a 71; very walkable. I find that to be absolutely impossible as you certainly need a car out here. Very walkable should be reserved for cities like South Beach and Boston. Just because theres a bunch of strip plazas and resturaunts down a couple of main avenues doesnt make it walkable.

It seems that the website uses the number of resturaunts and shops as an indicator to how walkable it is, along with their proximities to each other. But what they dont show is the ratio of cars to people, and a neighborhood with more cars than people and drivers who'll gladly run over pedestrians should not be considered 'very' walkable. Sorry to put the dampner, but its true :( Otherwise its great for finding stuff nearby :)

While I think for my neighborhood it was fairly ok. It did miss out on a lot of places that are walkable. I think that I'd still stick with http://www.yelp.com I can't really think of a time that other Yelpers be it in Seattle, Chicago, SF or PDX have let me down. G-d bless all those that Yelp and do it with pride! So out of 5 stars I'd give this walking site a solid 3 stars.

Greg

Excellent points Rian. If anything, it will be wonderful to have a resource while traveling to find a local place to get needed sundries to make a trip more comfortable. As I am directionally challenged, I am happy to have something to point me in the right direction to find stuff. BTW, nice torso!

Greg, Yelp seems wonderful! Thanks for that help as well!

VDN Yelp is an awesome site. It allows me to eat at local place and usually steers me away from the national chains & usually a bit healthier eats as well.

I bet you 5 cents you could bounce a nickel off em ;) LOL. But As much as I like to have my directions keyed out for driving when finding things, sometimes its fun to just walk about and allow room to get lost (if you're in a safe part of town of course). Theres been places where I've just got up and started walking around and I would run into all the places I needed by mistake. Walking is one exception where I 'follow the crowd' cause they lead you right to where the happening parts are.
