I would only ask the return ticket to be flexible so I can change the date to whatever suits me according to my needs.

 

So as not to hijack another thread, I lifted the above quote from it. The comment got me to thinking about the advantage of buying refundable (or flexible) tickets. From my experience, the cost of a refundable ticket far exceeds the cost of a non-refundable ticket. So much so, that I can change the ticket a couple of times, pay the penalty, and still come out ahead.
