Finishing the new Clemens book called "American Icon: The Fall of Roger Clemens and the Rise of Steroids in America's Pastime," I have some thoughts.

 

As much as I dislike Clemens bombastic behavior, he surrounded himself mostly with decent people, like his wife, Debbie, Pettitte et. al. Even his accuser, Brian McNamee, is not a complete jerk.

 

Clemens comes across better than Pete Rose (far better) and presumably Alex Rodriguez

(based on reviews, not read the book yet).

 

Pettitte is a favorite on this site. I agree. He has a huge amount of sex appeal.

 

Clemens and Pettitte (mentor and pupil) spend so much time together that if Andy were not the most devout Christain on the planet, it would be difficult not to believe that there was a sexual relationship there. Has anyone ever speculated otherwise (beyond wishful thinking)?

You make a valid point.

 

After the Mitchell Report was issued, Pettitte admitted using HGH and reluctantly linked Clemens with HGH use as well. Clemens denied use of steriods and HGH in the strongest possible terms under oath before a Congressional committee (and in many other forums).

 

Their trainer provided the information, so Pettitte's admission gave huge cover for the trainer on the Clemens allegations.

 

When I posted I had just read about Clemens' high power legal team going after anyone who was seen as the enemy in a take-no-prisioners manner.

 

The legal team saw Pettitte as an enemy. But, Clemens did not; he still likes Pettitte. So Clemens would have stopped his legal team from leaking anything negative in Pettitte's past, in the unlikely situation that there's anything to leak.
