Man Claims Heiress Fired Him Because He Was Gay

A New York man says in a $5 million lawsuit that heiress Leona Helmsley fired him on his first day working for her because he was gay. Michael Ward was dismissed from his management job at the Helmsley Hotel after Helmsley discovered he was homosexual, claims his lawyer.

The lawsuit says Ward told his supervisor, who was also gay, about his sexual orientation. The supervisor was also fired the same day from Helmsley's employment, says the lawsuit.

Helmsley's lawyer said the lawsuit was "ridiculous" and the firing was to do with the fact that Ward did not impress his employer.

The lawyer added that Hemsley, 81, was a target for such cases.

Helmsley was convicted in 1989 on tax evasion charges. She was accused of using hotel employees to work on her country estate, writing off their pay as business expenses, He earned herself the nickname "Queen of Mean" and spent 18 months behind bars.

Ward is the third gay man to sue Helmsley for firing him because of his sexual orientation. Charles Bell, a hotel manager and former chief operating officer Patrick Ward, also sued her. Bell's suit is still pending. Ward settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.
