Flaming Icon

Out of curiousity, when I log onto the message board only the items that I have not checked out before are usually lit up. This is sometimes, however, not always excepted by the postings that have a little flaming icon. What happens to a posting to get it a flaming icon and how long does it last before the flame goes out?

Doesn't it just show that there are more than XXX replies to the original post?
