In February I'm trying to leave Phuket around noon, and arrive in Chiang Rai mid-afternoon (direct would be great, but through Bangkok is ok). Doesn't work using Thai Air or Air Asia. Any company I'm missing?

Bangkok Airways can get you to Chiang Mai from BKK on A 1220 flight.

I think the flights are limited to Chiang Rai...going to Chiang Mai will give you more choice. Spend a couple of days and get a car/driver to Chiang Rai.

It looks as if Thai Air or a 3-hour drive from Chiang Mai are your only options. I checked PBair, but they don't fly to Chiang Rai either.

It's all rather moot, however. One-Two-Go only flies from Don Muang to Hat Yai, Phuket or Chiang Mai.

Chiang Rai is a pretty small, quiet airport.

I think when I flew from there back to BKK a couple of years ago the only choices were THAI and AirAsia.

If you are on a tight schedule I don't think it will work trying to leave HKT around noon and arriving Chiang Rai mid-afternoon.

The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is over a very winding highway and takes several hours. But it's a pretty drive.
