Hey you Rio experts -- I heard a rumor, and I'm hoping you can correct it:

I heard that ATM cards running on the Cirrus system do not work in Rio -- that only "Plus" system ATMs will work. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Balderdash! As has been said many times, the secret is in knowing which banks' ATMs work. Citibank and Banco do Brasil absolutely work on Cirrus. Make careful note of the name "stickers" on the many ATMs usual at the latter's offices. Some yes, some no, but always some. Itau bank is problematic.

Jake is right. If the citibank ATM's at Blockbuster are down/out of cash, which seems to happen frequently on Sundays, go north 1/4 block, same side of the street to HSBC bank, they have several "outside" ATM's and directions in English.

And very importantly, you can get up to R$1,000 a day now. That's up to 20 guys at the baths. Much better than last year... it was only five guys a day then :9

Have fun!
