Alan B. Stone, Canadian photographer (1928 - 1992)

I was searching for a "gay" movie on Kanopy and found a documentary film about a Montreal based gay photographer, Alan B. Stone, (1928 - 1992) known mostly for his beefcake photos.  The film is called Eye on the Guy: Alan B. Stone and the Age of Beefcake.

The film itself painted a much more in-depth story than just erotic photos.  If you like photography, history and a good documentary, I recommend it.

After some Internet surfing I learned that many thousands of his negatives along with photographs and other of his memorabilia are archived in Montreal at the Quebec Gay Archives.

An Alan B. Stone exhibition was curated at The International Center of Photography in NYC many years ago

by David Deitcher.  He was originally from Montreal.  Deitcher said.....

“Those pictures had the uncanny effect of conjuring feelings of terror and desire which cleaved my adolescence.

Stone’s photographs captured the city not only as I saw it, but as I longed to experience more of it.”

Deitcher released a book about Stone photography which I ordered.

I doubt if I will make it to Montreal anytime soon to see the archives so am looking forward to the book.

Here is a nicely done essay written by Deitcher about Montreal and photography.
