I'm actually okay with therapeutic only if the massage is quality — but I’m definitely curious if it’s a YMMV situation…

If you are looking for solid deep tissue kneading, his is not quality: C- at best. Made a mistake of hiring him for 90 mins as he could only manage swedish kneading at the time. Also highly doubt that he's a ymmv provider: both of those factored in, I'd save my time and money for another masseur if I were you.
