1867 - Congress creates 1st all-black university, Howard U in Washington, D.C.
1929 - Queen-mother Emma opens Antonie van Leeuwenhoek House in Amsterdam
1947 - 2nd Cannes Film Festival ends with six different awards presented including Best Musical for Vincente Minnelli's" Ziegfeld Follies" and Walt Disney's "Dumbo" Best Animation
1970 - Ringo Starr releases his 2nd solo album "Beaucoups of Blues", a collection of country music recorded in Nashville, Tennessee
1973 - 3-man crew of Skylab 3 make safe splashdown in Pacific after 59 days
1987 - Major General Sitiveni Rabuka stages a second Fijian coup and declares Fiji a republic
1989 - Boston Red Sox Wade Boggs is 1st to get 200 hits and 100 walks in 4 consecutive seasons
2008 - The "Celtic Tiger" slides into recession for the first time in over two decades, recording a 0.5% fall in second quarter GDP, following a 0.3% decline in the first quarter
2019 - Australia's Capital Territory becomes the 1st state in Australia to legalize recreational marijuana
