1914 - Dardanelles: French and British fleet bombards Turkish forts
1923 - Young Stribling ostensibly beats Mike McTigue on points in Columbus, Georgia for world light-heavyweight boxing title; referee Harry Ertle later calls fight a draw, claims coerced by promoters to award fight to Stribling; McTigue retains title
1949 - United Nations' permanent NYC headquarters is dedicated
1965 - Pope Paul VI becomes 1st Pope to visit Western Hemisphere (UN)
1976 - US Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz resigns after telling a racial joke
1986 - NY Yankees closer Dave Righetti saves both doubleheader games at Fenway Park for 5-3 and 3-1 wins v Boston; Righetti's MLB record 46th save
1987 - First "Scab Sunday" of NFL football with replacement players as a result of players strike; chiefly related to the expiration of 1982 Collective Bargaining Agreement; players returned October 15
1991 - Whiteland Janice, driven by Mike Lachance, wins Kentucky Futurity
1992 - 1st time AL East and West champs have same record (96-66)-Tor and Oak
2001 - Brendan Shanahan scores a hat trick in Red Wings 4-3 OT win at San Jose; becomes second player in NHL history to score an opening-night hat trick twice in his career
