When I click on a dark background and save nothing happens. It was fine yesterday. I had the dark background.

Got it. I also clicked on the lightbulb and got came back..

Yes.  You triggered "dark mode".  If you click on the customizer button next to that you can also stay in the lighter color mode but pick a few different background images.
