Looks like I am taking a kind of unexpected detour to Indy on my way to Memphis at the end of Sept. I was thinking of just staying by the airport but I am not too sure. I don't like driving in unfamiliar areas so I will be relying on public transport. Is there a gayborhood in Indy that has hotels near by or in the gayborhood? Or any suggestions on where a good inexpensive place to stay would be that is easy to get around? And suggestions on things to check out would be super too.

Hugs,

Greg

Hey there!

I'm going to Indianapolis tomorrow to meet a client for a few days...When i get back i'll post a message with any worthwhile suggestions i may be able to come up with after being there...

woo hoo!

I have visited Indy several times in the past, and actually spend my last birthday there. Indy has one of my favorite stripper bars - the Unicorn. Cheap cover/membership fees . . . friendly dancers.

The gay bars are spread, north of the downtown area. I usually rent a car, but I have used taxis to get to the gay bars. There are many homeless men walking in this area at night.

There are some nice downtown hotels on Priceline - check out the BiddingforTravel site for the current hotels and winning bids. Beware of the Crowne Plaza, it is build on top of what was the Union Station. You can feel and hear the trains arrive at the station below.

Email me if you want more info

A dull, carbound city that wishes it was in the sunbelt. Not a great place for restaurants, either. The gay bars are in areas that are a bit away from the rest of downtown. The Unicorn has been there for many years and occasionally gets porn headliners. Kyler Kox (reviewed here) has worked there in the warm weather months for years.

I used to live in Bloomington and have come thru Indy a couple times in the past few years--most recently last year.

hey guys!

i just got back from Indy last night and had a great time!

it's funny that you would mention the Crowne Plaza, bakopanda...that's actually where i and my client stayed.

The hotel offers the usual rooms, but it also has restored sleeping cars for rent, which is where we stayed.

the hotel was quite pleasant i thought (but then again, if the beds are comfy and the towels are thick i'm a happy boy...)

they also have these odd "ghosts" that are plaster casts of different people (a soldier, a sailor, a couple nuns etc) that are scattered around the property and it is still recognizably a railway station structure...and it's true about feeling the trains as they rumble through the station under the hotel.

i can see how the rumbling might be annoying in the normal rooms, but in the sleeping car, it was really quite pleasant...very much like being in a real sleeping car. i loved it.

i'll drop you an email as well Greg....

Cheers!

Sounds like a great place Steve! Sounds like you had a good stay. The idea of the restored sleeper cars sounds terrific. Just need to find a tourist reason to go there. Drove through there back in '01 on my way back from STL to DC, just don't know enough about it to make it a place to visit - like SF, San Diego, Chicago, and the such.

I agree about the comfy bed and towels. Have to say the beds at the Westin SF Market Street are great, the towels thick (but a little hard IMO). I love soft, thick towels here. I assume that the Heavenly Bed and Bath that the Westin chain promotes should be the same at their other properties.

Steve thanks for the info. This trip the hotel issue has been resolved. I LOVE the idea of restoring old train cars and turning them into rooms. When I used to live just south of Seattle I'd take the train into the city and back to get to school and work and it was so much more enjoyable then the packed standing room and sitting on your neighbors lap ride. When I find myself heading back to Indy I will for sure have to check out the train rooms.

Greg

Are you nuts? It sounds like a great way to travel - especially if you get to choose the lap!
