Try http://www.priceline.com. Check both the hotels with prices that they list as well as the biding section. The biding section indicates that the maximum one can expect to pay at a three and a half star hotel (the top) in the center of the city is $192. If you aren't concerned about which hotel you use I would start bidding at between $100 and $125. I have used this site for hotels all over the country and have been very pleased with the results.

I would second that recommendation for Priceline. Unless one needs to go to a specific hotel due to a convention or for frequent traveler benefits, one should usually book through Priceline (except in Las Vegas, where Priceline doesn't work very well). Another place is Hotwire, which currently has 2 1/2*'s in downtown Memphis for $45 (2 1/2 * may be Holiday Inn Expresses, etc.). One rule of thumb is to take Hotwire's price and drop it by another 20% for your Priceline bid. Another place to find an appropriate Priceline bid is http://www.betterbidding.com (there's another one, but they don't have any Hotwire info, and the other site is run by a bitch).

Thanks guys for the suggestions. It looks like maybe I'll need to give Price Line a go. I was looking at the Madison but EAK! The price almost gave me a heart attach! As for the other site that wasn't named I've heard the same sentiments over at flyer talk about the lady who runs it LOL. So you aren't the only one who feels that way.

Greg

Just FYI, the Madison may show up as a 2* on Priceline, so possibly best to bid 2 1/2* or above. Let us know what you end up with!

As it is looking right now I am going to be heading down to Memphis in September. It has been ages since I've been down there and it is all a blur to me. Does anyone have any suggestions on hotels preferably in downtown Memphis that are not 250+ a night? I was doing some searching and I am shocked at the prices. I didn't realize that Memphis other then Elvis was that popular.

Greg

There is a nice nice Hampton Inn just off of beale street. It is more of an upscale boutique hotel than a normal Hampton. Not sure on the price since I don't know your exact dates of travel. Maybe you can use Hilton Honors Points if you are a frequent guest member.

good luck.

I just logged onto my Hilton account. That Hampton Inn goes for $175 a night and is Hilton HHonors category 4 (30,000 points). I definitely wouldn't waste my points (assuming he has them). I was glad to be able to use my hotel points for Oktoberfest, when hotel rooms in Munich are going for upwards of $300/night. Hilton sometimes has an opportunity category where Hamptons sometimes go for 7500. Those are better use of points. It does seem like a nice hotel, though. One sometimes his Hamptons under the 2 1/2* category on Priceline. This one might even be classified in a 3* category (although I've never seen Priceline put a Hampton Inn in a 3* category before).
