I finally got to meet my Russian mother-in-law in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and she gave us (among other things) some Cubita coffee which she had just picked up in Varadero, Cuba. I thought "That's funny, I've never heard of Cuban coffee..." but then I remembered that as an American, I would have no way of knowing about it. Not like I could find it at my local Starbuck's. How is Cuban coffee regarded in the rest of the world? I do always hide a bottle of Havana Club 7 anos in my checked luggage when I leave the country, but I've never heard about Cuban coffee.

Coffee in Cuba has a LONG old tradition, even now with the kind of poverty the live in, nobody would invite you home without serving you a cup of strong (whenever good beans are available...) coffee.

It's kind of Italian espresso tradition.

Cuban coffee is very strong and, to my WASP taste, about the best in the world. I am fortunate enough to live in a town with a lot of Cuban residents, so I can get American-produced Cuban coffee. It's not as good as Cubita which to me is the finest Cuban coffee available. When I lived outside the US, and therefore outside the ridiculous embargo on Cuban goods, I could buy Cubita easily. Now that I am back in the US, I miss being able to buy it. And I agree Havana Club is outstanding rum...as is Nicaragua's Flor de Cana.

We need to dump the embargo!
