I remember reading many years ago that the reason he chose his mother's name for his acting career rather than his father's Segal because it was Jewish and would hurt his career.

 

I thought that was rather sad.

Ethel Zimmermann changed her name to Ethel Merman because it would take fewer lights outside the theater. Ethel was more well known than Mr. Benson. So we are even now.
