Little Britain is OUTRAGEOUS! If you love this show I suggest you get seasons 1 and 2 now available on DVD. The DVD extras are worth it.

Now, "The Catherine Tate Show" has finally hit our shores and is now playing on BBC America. She is a cross between Little Britain and Tracy Ullman. Catherine is very funny.

Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPo_JbR0j2Q&search=catherine%20tate%20

Her first bit as the obnoxious school girl is truly funny. I love it when she goes into "Am I Bothered" mode.

HOWEVER...the second part of this video she portrays the reoccurring character of Derek. He is an older VERY in the closet gay man. When the doctor suggests he goes to the new gay men's health clinic Derek goes into a tizzy and lets out a new phrase that I am saying all too often now.

Let me know what you think Jeff.

Enjoy. VDN

VDN, funny you should mention it, but I just returned seasons 1 & 2 of Little Britain to the video store. I kept it for a few days and watched all the extras...I'll probably end up buying it.

I agree, Catherine Tate's quite funny also, the character Derek's a hoot and I love "Am I bothered" girl. Earlier this year I got turned on to Coupling and Footballer's Wives on BBCa. Check them out if you haven't already. I really like how well-written and acted Coupling is and the soap opera outrageousness of Footballer's Wives. Much edgier stuff and way more entertaining than most American tv shows.

I find that these are DVDs I return to watch again and again because some of the things are just so shocking and funny at the same time. It all stays fresh for me.

I know message center member JT Brooklyn is really into Footballer's Wives. I watched it a few times and knew I could get into it very much. My DVR record list is already obscenely long. ;) And yes ... MUCH more entertaining than a lot of American TV crap. Does your cable provider also give you BBC on demand? It is great.

I agree the shows are hugely rewatchable. I have both

first and second seasons and look forward to the third

becoming available on dvd.

The only negative is the seasons consist of too few

episodes. :(

To those who have absolutely no idea what the show is about. I suppose someone ought to provide a slight little insight. So here we go, " Little Britain is a sketch show where the creators mock society in Britain today. Some of it is incredibly true, and at times you can even name a person you know who has exactly the same traits. Okay, so stupid catchphrases aside, this programme has definitely changed modern society in Britain. We've learn't to laugh at ourselves and that's a good thing these days. Now who are the people involved in this sensational show. Well, " Little Britain " stars Matt Lucas and David Williams acting as various people in this sketch show that will have you laughing in no time at all.

At times the show is quite sick and racist, but as the audience one cannot help but laugh at the sick stuff ( mind you not the racist stuff though ). The show airs on BBC 1 in the United Kingdom and has a viewership of about 6.8 million in the current third year ( down 3 million from the previous two years ). The one, the only, Mr Tom Baker narrates the show and offcourse there are some wonderful celebrity guest stars including Vanessa Fetz and Charlie ? ( can't remember his last name, but I think he currently appears on BBC soap " Eastenders " ).

I absolutely adore the characters of Vicky and Marjorie. Overall this show is very good, but the big question is has this sentimental favourite passed it's prime. I hate to say this, but unfortunately the viewer really only needed the first two seasons because they were absolutely superb and the third serial had a lot to live up to. Sadly the third serial did not live up to previous standards and that's a real shame because so much more could have been done and they the writers could have been more outrageous ( if that's remotely possible ). In a way I'm sort of glad that if the rumours are true that this third season for the BBC was indeed to be the very last season because it needs to rest and let other comedies have a go and shine in it's place.

That's it, I couldn't think of what Derek said whenever it's implied that he may be gay. I knew VERY was in there somewhere.

They do, but I have basic cable (76 channels) as a part of a great deal that bundled together phone/cable/internet for $100 a month. I'm cheap. I'm afraid that if I had more channels/features that I'd never leave the house. ;-)

That seems to be one of the biggest differences between American and British sitcoms. I ALWAYS hated the fact Ab Fab seasons were too short. I also like "As Time Goes By" and those seasons were short as well. However, there are no commercials. :)

I have over used it quite a bit now and I am beginning to annoy people more than I do already. ;) The way she delivers it as the character Derek is completely over the top and very dramatic. And when she says "who dear me dear gay dear no dear" I always laugh loudly.

When the older woman vomits every time she hears who made the jam I am both appalled and wildly entertained. If people are very politically correct then this is the show NOT to watch.

I did like how the last show in the third season put a period at the end of many of the characters. I hope this means we will see some new ones. When does the 4th season debut in the UK? I hope the rumors you speak of aren't true that this is the end.

I agree. That seems to be fairly common with British TV shows, especially compared to the 22 or so episodes average for most American sitcoms on network TV. In watching a "making of" feature on Coupling DVD, it apparently comes down to costs. There's so much more advertising money thrown at shows here in the U.S.

Nice post Ro.

LB is one of the few shows that can seriously topple the comedy crowns of such BBC greats as AbFab, Vicar of Dibley and Black Adder. It's fresh, horribly irreverent (take that Monty Python!) and has spawned some of the best one-liners i've heard to date.

I will admit to still having a soft spot for whenever Patsy Stone calls someone a 'sniveling piece of dribble piss' on AbFab. It's writing like that (with Lumley's perfect delivery) makes me wonder what the hell is up with American sitcoms.

I wouldn't be so quick with the praise, BN. It appears that Rohale wrote the first sentence and then cobbled together 2 reviews from TV.com. A graduate of the Ann Coulter School of Plagiarism are you Ro?

LOL! I too noticed there weren't appropriate footnotes! I didn't say a word though. However, I am imposing control on my posts as I have incited a riot in a Yahoo Group I belong to because a member didn't say "thank you". I made a simple reminder about manners and now I am deemed evil and inappropriate. I am the child of Darth Vader and Miss Manners.

A graduate of Ann Coulter School of Plagiarism, not really, afterall I doubt that she'd ever heard of " Little Britain ". Now if on the other hand she has heard of game show host, Bruce Forsyth. Perhaps her writings may garner my attention. The only problem for me is that from time to time, I'm sure you or others will find or tread or retread by accident lots of stuff that I've written on god knows how many websites over say the past nine odd years. Now I try to write with complete satisfation for my own sake or have been involved with as a sort of joint venture to help a friend or whatever get a point across. Someone sparks the idea for a sentence and the main body of work may come from me.

If you dont really understand the above paragraph, oh well because I really couldn't be bothered, or so the theory goes.

As to the potential for a fourth year to the programme, talks are very much ongoing between the BBC and offcourse Matt Lucas. In the meantime what has been agreed upon between all parties involved is the idea of doing a christmas special. I believe the scheduling of the transmission date has been set forth for what appears to be December 23 in the United Kingdom. I dont know what the time frame will be for viewers in North America.

Now going back to the potential of a fourth season, BBC controller Julie Gardner has been somewhat been very quiet about the ongoing talks other than to say " Things Are Progressing Quiet Nicely ". What caught my eye the most is the report in various trade papers of how the BBC are closely monitoring the DVD sales, which have been spectacular especially in the United States, Canada and Australia. The British public and the world at large will most probably find out sometime late August or early September if this sketch show will be returning or not. This is the latest news so far.

Benjamin,

I'll make this easy and very much lite in tone. Basically nothing fancy what so ever. Speaking along the lines of Monthy Python, John Cleese was recently aksed about the state of British television comedy. From his point of view, he feels nowadays comedy writers in Britain are sketching out ideas with an American teenage audience in mind. I tend to agree with him. In fact I believe John's next geat literary quest is to write a book and in turn teaching a new generation of young comedy writers the technique that he himself had to learn from such greats as Harry Seacome and offcourse the late great Spike Milligan all those years ago.

In fact within the same interview, he was asked " Why Not John Cleese Have A Go ". Sadly he gave the response that practically implied due to his age, he feels he has nothing new to offer that will grab someone by the shirt collar and in turn will make the individual sit down on a whoopy cushion and listen.

In a way I think he's right to a certain degree ( not on the whoopy cushion, though ). Even though the BBC have regained in the ratings bidding war with ITV, thanks in part to such shows as obviously " Little Britain " and the most recent " Extras ". Unfortunately there are quite a number of shows that are just plain not worth watching.

Benj, you mentioned " Black Adder " and " Af Fab ". I remember as a kid watching Rowan Atkinson's great classic every Thursday night on BBC 1, right after the 9 O'Clock News with my mum. " Black Adder " for Rowan was his first taste of true success. Offcourse the character of the scheming " Edmund " in which Rowan played it deliciously darkly and what a performance he gave. I very much liked the way he approached villainry in his character, almost a creepy dance movement in his mannerisms.

As people often like to say " Those Were The Days ". Offcourse television of the past in the form of such classics as " Black Adder ", " Monthy Python " and " Only Fools And Horses " have now become the stuff of nostalgia these days.

In the present television climate, what I find interesting is that a lot of British comedy writers are openly saying that they're looking across the Atlantic for inspiration. I now very much understand why John Cleese and Derek Griffith are worried about the current crop of British televison writers and where their individual sources of inspiration come from. American television for the last thirty odd years have been taking ideas from the BBC and ITV. Now the trend is reversing and obviously making some of the older established and experienced comediens worried. Funnily enough a lot of the young adults in Britain absolutely love what's coming out of America, simply because the comedy is more fast paced, I suppose.

Who knows what will become the trend setter in tomorrows world of comedy. Thank goodness it's not " Roland Rat " anymore. That's it for me for the time being.

I know you dont understand. As for writing it myself, maybe it was my shadow. Who really knows anymore. Besides watching " So You Think You Can Dance " was the attention getter of the night.

I see now why you

>plagiarize. Rather than admit that you cobbled together 2

>reviews from TV.com and presented them as your own opinion

>without any attribution, you've chosen to respond with this

>drivel. Ann would be proud.

Endless drivel, now that's somewhat interesting. It's funny because I dont know anything about you and nor do I really care. I'm a competetive fella every once in a while. Here is a little bit of Tom Foolery. If you and I could participate in a writing challenge or competition over a topic like " Little Britain " for example with a time limit of thirty minutes to fill in what would amount to be five pages of written material. To spicen matters up a bit. Let's say the criteria involved to name all the characters, the programmes's influence on the culture of Great Britain. As an overseas export, how has the show helped shape the world's view of British society within the English speaking world.

Again the writing challenge would be just between you and I and no one else. With my thoughts on paper versus your own opinions in written ink or typed by using a lap-top. Apparently you seem to have an infatuation with Ann Coulter. Perhaps she should be in your corner to provide you inspiration and I'd have Tom Baker in mine. With all the above mentioned thus taken into consideration. I'll boldly say that from a writer's point of view that you really wouldn't stand a chance, mark my words, I'd practically leave you in the dust, fair and square.

I think it would be a good challenge, especially if there was a wager involved because then the stakes would be more interesting. Hey I'd give your money back and shake your hands out of politeness. I wouldn't say " See I Told You So ". I think I'd probably " Oh Well, That's Life ".

Obviously it's a theoritical situation that'll never happen, but I'm sure Ann would be proud of you, just for trying.

Jeff, if you enjoy British Comedy and can stand a bit of Black Humor, a short lived series that was great is "A League Of Gentlemen" with about 4 guys playing all the major parts, male and female. Rent it and find out if you are "Local".

You got that right. I've no doubt whatsoever in your ability to fill a book or a computer screen in record time on ANY subject with your stitched together, Frankenstein-esque "opinions". Challenging me to a writing duel is changing the subject (Ann would be VERY proud). The point is that you plagiarized from those 2 reviews posted on TV.com and presented them here as your own opinion without any credit to the original authors.

This scene from All About Eve really sums it up.

ADDISON

Is it possible - even conceivable -

that you've confused me with that

gang of backward children you've

been playing tricks on - that you

have the same contempt for me that

you have for them?

EVE

I'm sure you mean something by

that, Addison, but I don't know

what...

ADDISON

Look closely, Eve, it's time you

did. I am Addison deWitt. I'm

nobody's fool. Least of all -

yours.

EVE

I never intended you to be.

ADDISON

Yes, you did. You still do

I've heard good things about "League". The boys from Little Britain referenced it on one of the episode commentary tracks.

Thanks for the tip, Allen. I'll let you know if I'm "local". :-)

I never write along those lines to what you refer as Frankestein esque opinions. Either shoot straight from the hip or make the damn thing pretty much analytical but non-persuasive.

I suppose Iam changing the subject, but I'll still lay waste to you, writing style that is in a non Frankenstein manner, but still it'll be a cake walk. As for the last bit, I'll take care of things. With caution, a suprise might be on the horizon and I'll be polite about it with a private e-mail.

BTW, but see ya around TV.com every so often, I suppose.
