We have all gotten email forwards that purport to be the truth.

My most recent experience came from a cousin whom I dearly love. This forward showed a picture of marines with their heads bowed in prayer.

The gist of the mail was to complain that the ACLU had mounted an attack against government employees (marines) praying at a government event (the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps.)

Well, something didn't sound right about that to me, and so, as I have done frequently lately, I went to the Internet to see what the truth was. There are a number of sites that deal with urban legends, and when none of them had any reference to the subject, I went to the ACLU site. Lo and behold, there was a mention of the photo and bogus email. Come to find out that in fact the ACLU had no knowledge of the origin of the mail, but in fact had never mounted a campaign against the Marines praying and further the ACLU Spokesman mentioned in email is a totally made up name.

Now, I understand some people get riled over some the agenda of the ACLU (who charter intent is to protect personal freedoms), but to just make stuff up to advance an agenda, it's like so foreign to me. I am not living in a bubble, I know mendacity exists, I am just always floored when the scope of it rears it's ugly head.

BTW, I took the time to pick out the originating email address and sent both the originator and my cousin a correction so they could forward the truth.

There, I feel much better now. Thank you.

Yeah, just like at CBS and the faked Bush memos.

Shocking.

Shockingly yours,

I personally consider all forwards to be nothing more than gossip. My friends know that if there is information that they feel is important for me to read, then they do what they have to (cut & paste) to send a new email to me. They know I automatically delete any emails starting with FW:
