I may have mentioned having gone back to music grad school and subsequenlty earning a master's degree recently. A couple of times I had my cell phone in my pocket on vibrate during a rehearsal, and would check it discretely at a pause when attention was on another section, mumbling "Dialing for dollars is trying to reach me". After a couple of blank looks, I decided to take a survey - out of 7 talented and hardworking music major undergraduates, only one of them had even heard of Janice Joplin, and that one only had a vague memory of the song "Benz", and hadn't really ever seen the dialing for dollars syndicated show on TV. I suddenly felt much older !

My partner is HIV+ and his primary care doctor changed his prescription from Truvada to Descovy, and he was told that it was as effective in *controlling* HIV as truvada with fewer side effects. [standard HIV treatment requires a third anti-retroviral]. His switch was done about 6 months ago, and his HIV load is still undetectable. I read the medscape article as saying there hasn't been enough clinical trials to prove the effectiveness in *prevention* and lack of side effects in all classes of patients (particularly women and some people of color). [update: I read only the first of 3 pages initially. Subsequently, one of the concerns stated was whether Descovy would be as effective as Truvade at stopping vaginal infection, and the concern was that this was completely ignored in the trials]. It would seem to me highly likely that if a medicine is good at stopping replication when a person is infected, it would be good at preventing infection, so that if it were offered to me as part of a clinical trial, I wouldn't hesistate at all. (And the diminishment of side effects in the population of those already infected has been established as well). But then, some things in nature defy logic.

Just to be argumentative in a friendly way, if I were in the position of responding to an ad by email, and given a function-related userID instead of a name, I would simply say "Hi! " Instead of "Hi joe,". Given my special interest in armpits, I would be drawn to such an advertisement rather than distanced from it (hope @scratchnsnifff notices the comment here ...)

So first a meta-comment. Way back in the day, my dad suggested I read "what color is your parachute", which had helpful advice about job seeking in general. And in many major radio markets there's a guy named Marty Nemko who hosts a call in program where he chat with people thinking about career changes. Speech and Communication folks sometimes go into broadcasting, but that's highly competitive, especially for middle age folks changing stream. If you're at all interesting in Marketing, and you're still working for one of those hospitality companies, it is sometimes easier to get a job in your own company's marketing department than it would be to land a job outside with only a degree and no experience in hand. Then after a year or two, it might be easier to get into a job in a general marketing department being able to show some experience on your resume.
