Though, if this is a student apartment (and Boston has loads of students living in cheap apartments off-campus), the decor may indeed be dated, and not his choice.

Here is my concern. Those pictures depict someone that indeed looks around that age. That being said the quality of the photo and the decor reminds me more of the mid - early 2000s. Maybe request 3 finger on this guy, and I don't mean in the butt. Okay maybe in the butt, but after he validates who he is.
