I am just an average layman-giggle I just used the word 'lay' legitimately- but it sounds worrying to me. And the issues with cars are usually driver errors not that the electrical panel is short circuiting and causing a fire and not that the gas tank is leaking and about to explode.

That's not probably 100% true unless you are orthodox. For example if you were Conservative or Reform, and probably the Orthodox too, but had hemophilia- I'm fairly sure the rabbinical authorities would let the parents skip the circumcision. And while I don't know of any Reform Jews who haven't circumcised their boys- there are probably some parents somewhere ( probably San Francisco) who wanted to keep their sons 'au naturel'--of course those few boys will be made fun of in the synagogue bathroom.

Iif Orthodox- he can only be Jewish if his mother is Jewish. I'm not sure about Conservative- but I thought they had changed it to either parent- and with Reform- the child is considered Jewish if either parent is Jewish and the child identifies/has been brought up Jewish.
