My parents owned a hair salon, so growing up I was told you don't tip the owner of a business, but you tip the service team because they are maybe renting the chair, etc. I apply that to massage. When I go to a spa, I understand that you are paying the spa for the 60 or 90 minutes, the masseur is getting paid an hourly rate, therefore you tip the masseur at the spa. But if someone is working for themselves they can just set their own rates accordingly. This is why it seemed a bit brazen for him to turn around and ask me for a tip on top of a nearly $500 massage.

Also, when in home massage is taking place it's not like the masseur has to share a cut of the massage fee with a business.

This is interesting. He is clearly the person who was a victim of a hate crime and he's featured in an NYT Op Ed video from 2013. Not here to judge a persons journey, he clearly went through something very traumatic and trauma can certainly change a person's journey though I would venture a guess the pitch to gay men that he is straight is a selling point. I've been curious to book him as well but I need a table massage and this added information makes me hesitant for some reason. It's just odd to come from where he is coming from and sort of gay bait clients that you are straight which for the client adds an element of risk. I don't know, a person who is a victim of a hate crime very well could go through a process where they change their entire persona as a self protective response. I guess end of day if he is a talented masseur that is really what matters.
