WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Gov Jeb Bush of hurricane-prone Florida will leave Jan 2 for Indonesia and other countries devastated by Sunday's killer quake and tsunamis, the White House said Thursday.

Powell and Bush, a younger brother of President George W Bush, will visit the region because the president wants to get a first-hand assessment of the disaster, a White House spokesman said. Powell and Gov Bush are expected to talk with Asian leaders and members of international relief organizations and nongovernmental organizations on ways to help victims of the disaster. (Kyodo News)
