Only a few tens of US citizens have been confirmed dead from the tsunami so far. Way larger is the number missing or unaccounted for. The few reports I have seen say 3 to 4 thousand. It is looking increasingly likely that the missing are in fact dead but not yet identified. This could mean that the American death toll in the tsunami will exceed those lost on 9/11.

Bush seems unconcerned or insensitive to this possibility. It took him days to make any comment at all (you wonder how long it took his acolytes to persuade him that he could not declare war on "the Tsunami" which he probably thought was part of Al-Qaeda.

If California is awaiting "the big one" in earthquake terms, the east coast is unprepared for the giant one that will hit it sometime. A huge part the island of La Palma in the Canaries will slide into the sea during a future eruption of the volcano there. The eastern seaboard of the USA will be hit by a mega-tsunami at least 10 times the height of the recent one. The waters will wipe out swathes of lower lying land for perhaps hundreds of miles inland. The death toll will be in millions if no warning and evacuation system is in place. Forunately there is a possibility of closely monitoring the island during eruptions which are fairly regular. At the moment the event's timing is unknown, it could occur at the next eruption or take several to do it. When it will occur is as unpredicatable as the San Andreas fault but occcur it will.

Cheer up though, you might be sent $35 million to help out.
