Fascist gay people in Canada are causing fines and punishments to be issued against citizens who say bad things about gay people. That's happening all over Europe as well. Repressive abridgements of liberty are no better when gay people are responsible for them; in fact, they're worse, since gay people are fighting for liberty for themselves, and it's particularly stupid and self-defeating and wrong to simultaneously use State Power to abridge people's freedom.

But viruses which are germinated in Canada and Europe -- especially those spread by leftist do-gooders who are so convinced of their Core Goodness that they think that anything they do is, by definition, Right - are particulary virulent forms of disease.

When we're done with Iraq, can we PLEASE finally declare war on Canada and get rid of it once and for all before its sicknesses start irrevocably infecting the American bloodstream.

From http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2004_10_07.shtml#1097586698:

The Rapid Decline of Free Speech in Canada: Quebec's Human Rights Commission has ordered a man to pay a $1,000 fine because he referred to another man as a "fifi," the French equivalent of "fag." Worse yet, the comment wasn't made to the complainant (which would at least raise red flags about an implicit threat or true harassment of the individual), but to his "traveling companion." According to the CBC, the "Rights Commission ruled that the term was an inappropriate way of referring to homosexuals and adds to the disgrace and lack of respect of human dignity people are entitled to."

Now, it's obviously not nice to call someone a "fifi." But when the State can punish individuals for "inappropriate" comments they make in private, noncommercial contexts, the slippery slope towards authoritarianism is steep indeed. This, of course, is not the first example of the growing Canadian intolerance of freedom of speech.

Here's Andrew Sullivan's comment on it:

CANADIAN FREE SPEECH: Let me add my two cents of outrage to the way in which homophobes in Canada are denied freedom of speech. It's horrifying. I've long believed and argued that the central aim of the gay rights movement should be to expand freedom - for everyone. Speech codes and "hate crime" laws restrict freedom - and gays should have nothing to do with them. We should be defending the right of the Boy Scouts to discriminate if they so wish, while making the argument that they shouldn't. We should be defending the right of bigots to exclude gays from their St Patrick's Day parade if they so wish - because their freedoms are our freedoms also. This is particularly true in First Amendment matters. For centuries, free speech was the only real freedom gays ever had. The idea that we should now be curtailing it for others - whatever their views - is a betrayal of our past, our integrity and our freedom.

Why not - that way you could steal our natural resources (like hydro electric power) rather than paying for them. That's the American way, isn't it? Or at least according to the Bobsey twins!

If anyone is slipping towards fascism, it's the good ole USofA under George Bush. I think Europe and Canada had quite enough of it during the '30's and '40's (with the Europeans spawning it and Canada and others fighting it). We learned then that if you demonize a race or group in society, then it is easier to eradicate them. In Canada we are still trying to create a truly civil society that is civic minded. I don't see much effort being made in this regard south of the 49th parallel.

Quel horreur! Canadians can't call each other fags without getting a ticket. Next thing you know, Americans won't be able to use the N word.

Do you have any black friends, Doug? If you went out to dinner with a black friend and some stranger warned you to be careful with that n-----, what would be your reaction? You might not want to file a civil complaint with the authorities. Would it make a difference if you were black, yourself?

What if your friend was offended? What if, instead of the impression your story creates, the $1,000 penalty went to him? (See following story.)

Where were you when Congress passed laws assessing a $500 penalty for unsolicited faxes? For calls to people on the do-not-call list? Those are certainly restrictions on free speech, aren't they? Tell us how you feel about those, please.

And let us know what you would tell your black friend if he wanted to make a case of it.

Gay man awarded $1,000 for 'fifi' comment

Mon, 11 Oct 2004 CBC NEWS

MONTREAL - A gay man who was called a "fifi" by a used car salesman has been awarded $1,000 by Quebec's Human Rights Tribunal.

The man's name can't be revealed because of a publication ban.

The man told the judge he felt dehumanized, humiliated and degraded by the comment, which happened in November 2001 at Roger Poirier Automobile in Sorel, about 70 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The salesman, Marcel Bardier, used "discriminatory words in regard to [the complainant], by revealing his sexual orientation in hurtful and vexatious terms," wrote Judge Michele Pauze in her decision, according to the Montreal Gazette.

"Calling someone a `fifi' constitutes a scornful way of referring to homosexuals. The use of this term wounds and adds to the disgrace and lack of respect of human dignity a person [can suffer], homosexuals in particular."

In addition to the $1,000 in "moral damages," the car salesman and his employer must also pay interest and expenses.

Texas executed a man yesterday for kidnapping and murdering a gay man who was singled out for his sexual orientation.

Hate speech leads to hate crimes. Further south, a Mexican cardinal claimed that gay couples even give cockroaches the rank of family. This is his argument against gay marriage.

Defining hate speech, however, is the crux of the issue. It used to be that calling someone a queer was nasty, but now that is the increasingly accepted word. The cardinal's statements are stupid. Do they constitute hate speech? They cetainly were intended to inflame, but I doubt that he intended violence. Yet he may have contributed to bolstering bigotted feelings and an atmosphere of hate.

If one person calls a gay nasty names, is it just free speech? How about if a gang of thugs does it? I think the disrupting of "free" speech needs to be determined according to all of the surrounding facts.

It's so lucky for Dougie that he evidently doesn't live in Canada. Cause he'd be on his way to one of the concentration camps for gay homophobes himself. Somewhere like in Churchill!

But maybe one of our Canadian readers could nominate Dougie for a government watch list, so if he tries crossing the border they could just apprehend him before he utters any more hateful speech.

And if he isn't arrested for homophobic speech, maybe for anti-liberal speech? Because the way he uses "liberal" is the way some people use "fag" or the famous "n-word."

RE: Steal Doug's Password

Just a minute. Are you the same Doug69 who recently told us that Southy should be arrested for saying on this board that he wished something bad would happen to Bush? Was that you, or did someone steal your password and post that crap under your name? If it was you, where the hell do you get off yelling about freedom of speech?

Yup - it's the same old Dugger. And he can get away with yelling about freedom of speech because he's sooooooooo much more intelligent than we are. Or at least that's the way he sees it. His rose colored spectacles must be all fogged up by the backup of shit that has accumulated around the dear boy's ankles.
